Buying A Road Bike

Used or New, What’s the Difference?

So you are ready to make the big jump and buy a road bike eh? Well first let me say that if you’ve been using a mountain bike for triathlons and just can’t take it anymore, don’t feel bad because I’ve been in the same place!

I use a mountain bike for my first triathlon and although my time wasn’t the greatest, I learned how to train without having the best equipment. Strong legs can make all the difference!

However, if you really want to buy a road bike I strongly suggest taking your time enjoying the process. Sure, you could go out and buy a new bike today, but where’s the fun in that? Here is what I suggest:

  • Visit every bike store in your area to not only get a feel of each store’s inventory, but to get an idea where you will be treated best. More than likely you will be coming back for service and more gear.
  • Read every bike review and gear review magazine you can get your hands on and then do more research online. Buying a bike is almost like buying a car, only more important. Learn a little bit about every brand’s models and gear setup.
  • Consider buying a used bike.  You can use Craigslist, Ebay, your newspaper, bike shops, and a variety of other places to find used bikes at a great price.
  • Look for package deals. Often times you can get a discount if you buy a bike, pedals, and shoes together.
  • Last but not least, even if you buy a used bike, make sure you get fitted at a bike shop so you know which size is best for you. Buy a bike that is comfortable and rides well for you. Take your time riding them around to test before you plop down the cash.

Buying a bike is a fun process, but it is important to take you time and do it right. This bike is going to serve you for a long time!
