Sprint Triathlons
The Lazy Man’s Triathlon

Ok, all kidding aside Sprint Triathlons are probably the most common triathlons nationwide. They are great because they are shorter distances and therefore even beginner triathletes can get in on the action. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t competitive though, because you will find that there is usually a strong local following that will compete very hard to become the annual champion.
Most Sprint Triathlons consist of the following:
- 500m-750m Open Water Swim
- 20k Bike
- 5k Run
In between the swim and bike is Transition 1 (T1), where you will change into your cycling gear. After the Cycling event, you will hit Transition 2 (T2), where you will make a quick change into running gear and head for the final event.
When you arrive at the race to pick up your registration packet, you will have your number written on your leg and/or arm, put your bib onto your shirt, and then get your swim cap ready. Generally they will have colored swim caps to signify different age groups or categories. Listen for your group starting time to make sure you aren’t late. Transition areas are easily visible and I recommend arriving early to claim a good spot for your bike and gear layout.
As you can see, the race is composed of short distances and is a great way for new triathletes to get started. Most people are capable of doing all three events with little or no training and so if you are interested at all in finishing a triathlon, I highly recommend finding a local event and signing up.
To find a local race, I recommend visiting Active.com or Trifind for more information.
